Founded in the late 1970's, Casa Rugantino started as a small pizza shop owned by Kitchener family, the Trottas. This popular eatery in the heart of Belmont Village was later taken over by another Italian family that brought their recipes and food style and turned the once pizza shop into a full service restaurant. In 2009, the Trotta family resumed ownership of their father's once pizza shop and brought their family Italian dishes and cuisine back to Casa Rugantino.
People couldn't get enough of the great Italian food, service and amazing rustic ambiance at Casa Rugantino, which unfortunately made getting a table difficult in the 30 seat restaurant. Then, a vacancy in the building next door provided an excellent opportunity for the Trottas to add a little leg room to their family restaurant. Removing the wall between the two storefronts was just the first step however in a remodeling that brought the total seating capacity up to 60 with an additional 15 seats outside on their beautiful patio. The walls are covered in antique barn board and a beautiful light coloured brick and the ceiling joists have been left exposed with delicate, warm lighting dotting the tables and alcoves. The rustic feel of the Italian bistro is still there even with the expansion and a second accordion window has been added so that in the summer the majority of the front of the restaurant can be opened up to the beautiful summer air in Belmont Village.
The most impressive addition is the giant marble wine bar. Grab a chair at this beautiful section of the restaurant and have a craft beer from their taps or on of their signature drinks including their famous sangria. A new freezer allows them to keep a great selection of gelato, Italian ice cream, on hand and don't forget to have a look at their new dessert fridge which keeps a rotating variety of treats from fresh made Cannolis to cheese cake!
