In its second year, the Belmont Village Food Drive was an undisputed success. 30 businesses including all Belmont Village Food Avenue restaurants, All Things Tea and Chelsea Market took food drop boxes in their establishments for the entire month of November leading up to Giving Tuesday, November 29th.
"Last year we raised 565 lbs of food," said co-founder Blayr Hogg, of the Belmont Village Financial Group, "and our goal this year was at least 750 lbs. We gave all the businesses a couple extra weeks this year to get their customers and staff involved. We also got five more businesses involved." In addition to collection during the month of November, a pop up food drive donation center was setup during Christmas In The Village. Visitors to the annual Belmont Village Christmas celebration could purchase food to put into the food drive boxes. 110 lbs of extra food was raised at that event alone in a 4 hour period!
On Giving Tuesday morning, all the food that had been collected was weighed in at Global Pet Foods with the use of their large breed dog scale. The Dave Rocks 107.5 Morning Buzz show sent Darryl's Detour to help us cover the exciting event and when our morning was done we had collected 1,110 lbs of food. In addition, $723 had been donated which will go towards over 2,000 additional meals.
An incredible success and a great way to start Giving Tuesday. Thanks to all the businesses and residents who helped make this year a great one for the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
